At J.L. Schroeder Woodworking, we believe that the most meaningful pieces are created with time, intention, and respect for the craft. Thalassa is a reflection of that philosophy—a monumental hand-carved mahogany sculpture inspired by the power, beauty, and mystery of the sea.
The name Thalassa comes from the ancient Greek word for “sea” and refers to the primordial spirit who personified the ocean in Greek mythology. The sculpture captures the timeless relationship between humanity and the sea, representing both its calm beauty and its incredible strength.
Creating Thalassa was a journey that took more than a year of dedication and craftsmanship. Starting with a massive piece of solid Khaya Mahogany, master woodcarver Alfredo Saenz carefully transformed the wood into a dramatic scene featuring Poseidon and a mermaid.
Standing approximately 8 feet tall, the sculpture was carved entirely by hand using traditional carving tools and techniques. Every detail was shaped slowly and intentionally—from Poseidon’s commanding expression and flowing beard to the delicate movement of the mermaid’s form and the intricate detail of her scales.
Working on a piece of this scale requires patience and a deep understanding of the material. The natural grain and warmth of the mahogany became part of the sculpture itself, adding character and depth that can only come from working with real wood.
Thalassa was designed and produced by J.L. Schroeder Woodworking as an exploration of what is possible when fine woodworking and sculpture come together.
